Huge apologies that I have not posted for so long and probably have some of you worried.
Geoff is progressing slowly. His speech has really improved and although not talking underwater yet ….. he is getting there.
He had a procedure last week – or possible the week before they went in to check on the surgery and also to put a ballon in which is quite a common procedure but with a few more risks because of the scaring etc from his previous radiation treatment. They did not end up doing the ballon as once they got in and had played around it was stretched as much as it can be.
He is now starting to take in a little more fluid – he is swallowing around 50 mls of water and a few spoonfuls of soup daily. Each swallow is a huge effort and a swallow takes around 6 – 10 seperate actions and is followed by lots of coughing and spluttering but it appears to be going down and there has not been any aspirating, so it can only improve from here on.
I cook a piece of bacon for him daily to have – he can’t swallow it but he loves the flavour. Says we should all eat bacon this way. He can’t wait to be able to have a cup of tea.
It is hard finding things to do that do not include people or food but hopefully he will be up to walks on the beach and in the bush soon.
He is back doing some work with the business but it is only out of necessity and doing an hour or 2 totally takes it out of him so the rest of the day is spent resting. The last 10 years has certainly taken its toll on my big strong husband. He has no strength at all and tires so easily.
It is getting easier for him and there has even been some moments of his humor creeping in … for many months it felt like it was all doom and gloom but we are starting to see that there is a future ahead, perhaps a little different than planned but thats ok.
You are welcome to send Geoff a text message (0488.544.456) and hopefully he will start chatting and having visitors again really soon.
Love to you all and thank you for caring.
